Papua-Nova Guiné

Papua-Nova Guiné
James Francis (Frank) Hurley
1921

"two people wearing large masks with plant fibre skirts, standing at the entrance to a thatched roof marea (club house), a large group of men and boys are standing in the background, all wearing loin cloths, some wearing personal ornaments; Papua New Guinea."

"Frank Hurley made two expeditions to Papua New Guinea and Torres Strait from 1921 to 1923. While in Papua New Guinea, at Tovei on the Island of Urima, Hurley both photographed and filmed a performance with the masks depicted in this photograph, the only known record of these masks, which were used in a ceremony that marked the banning of eating coconuts before a larger ceremony." daqui
